Do you work with parents, children and teenagers? Join the Funky Lizard network!
The Funky Lizard Network is unique, in that it brings together all people who provide activities and services for families, children and young people in the voluntary, community or faith (VCF) sector. Our aim is to celebrate the VCF sector, to learn together and to have a voice where decisions are made.
The Funky Lizard ensures that the voluntary, community and faith sector has a voice at the Tameside Children and Young People's Strategic Partnership. Anyone can join us at these meetings and find out what the decision makers are saying.
If you work with families, children, or young people you can be a member of the Funky Lizard, and the best part is, it’s absolutely free!

News and events
Tournaments, football training sessions and free match tickets for youth groups from FC United of Manchester
FC United of Manchester will be playing some of their home matches in Stalybridge this season and they will be carrying out some community work in the area over the next few months. They can offer groups and organisations, working with young men aged 16-19, the following events and services:
- Tournaments for 6-a-side teams of 16-19 year olds. Saturday 18 September, Copley Sports Centre, 12pm-2pm. All participants get free admission to the FC United match that kicks off at Stalybridge Celtic’s ground at 3pm.
- Community Cohesion Tournament for 16-19 year olds. Sunday 24 October, Copley Sports centre, 12pm-2pm. All participants get free admission to the FC United match that kicks off at Stalybridge Celtic’s ground at 3pm. All teams should bring a squad of 10 players. At least 30% of the players must be of a different ethnic group to the largest ethnic group represented in the squad.
- Free training sessions from FC United coaches. They can offer four free coaching sessions from FC United coaches, to groups intending to enter a team to the Community Cohesion tournament above. All you have to provide is a suitable venue for the sessions to take place. Ideally, these sessions should start in mid September and take place weekly running up to the date of the tournament. There is no funding for transport to the tournament.
- Free tickets to other matches played at Stalybridge. They can offer free tickets to FC United matches for community groups and community projects. Their other fixtures at Stalybridge this season are on Sunday 5 September and Sunday 19 December.
- They have plans for a Senior United Day on 6 November when their home match in Bury will be free to all over 50s, and community groups bringing people in this age category from Tameside will be very welcome.
- They are planning a People United Day on 20 November when there will be free admission to under 18s at their home match in Bury, as part of an anti-racism celebration. Again, Tameside based groups would be very welcome.
- Tournaments for community centres and youth clubs. They have had some interest from community centres in Manchester and Bury who are interested in organising tournaments for mixed age teams of 10-12 year olds and 7-9 year olds. There would be a cost attached to participating in these tournaments of around £90. If there are organisations in Tameside interested in taking part in tournaments or hosting a tournament, then they would be pleased to hear from you.
If you have any questions about these events, contact Robin Pye, Tel: 07794 122 602.

Volunteers booklet
We are proud to be able to bring you a small selection of stories about volunteers - a snap shot of the range and diversity of volunteer roles. We hope that each story brings about the realisation that volunteers are not added value, they are actual value. It is volunteers, and volunteering itself, that makes a difference.

Partnership Work in Action booklet 2007-2009
This booklet tells you about the people in the community, voluntary and faith sector who make a difference to the lives of families, children and young people. It also explains how the Funky Lizard network helps the sector celebrate what it does, how it learns together and how it influences change for the sector and for the people it serves. Funky Lizard would not have grown to where we are today without the support of our partners, so we give special thanks to you all.

Think Family and the support package available to parents in Tameside
The parenting offer in Tameside is growing with some key projects developing to support parenting and families within the Think Family context.
There are key drivers from the government that are greatly influencing this agenda around ‘Think Family’. Tameside, as other Local Authorities, have received some time limited funding to help support the targeted development and delivery of some projects to undertake work with families.
See our Parenting page for more on what is currently happening in Tameside and the projects being delivered and how your service can access, signpost or refer to.
