Representatives of over 60 voluntary organisations attended a meeting of GMCVO members. The half-day session provided an opportunity for delegates to find out more about their work, to meet GMCVO staff and network generally.
Presentations from staff included a view of the operating environment for the voluntary sector in Greater Manchester over the next few years, and short summaries of some of their current work.
Following the success of this first event GMCVO plan to hold further member’s meetings in the future.

The Greater Manchester Police and Crime Plan 2013-2016 was published at the end of March.
The plan reflects the priorities of local people following a public consultation carried out by Tony Lloyd, the Greater Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner.
The plan addresses areas such as anti-social behaviour, protecting vulnerable people, putting victims at the centre of the criminal justice system, dealing effectively with organised crime and terrorism, and building confidence in policing services

The National Association for the Voluntary and Community Action (NAVCA) is calling for examples of how local authorities are funding local charities and community groups.
This call is in connection with NAVCA's decision to team up with other national umbrella bodies to write to all local authorities urging them not to make disproportionate cuts to the sector – and reminding them of their duties.

New methods for claiming back the basic rate of tax on Gift Aid donations came into force on 22 April.
Under the new rules, charities and community amateur sports clubs (CASCs) can claim in three different ways – using an online form, through the charity’s database, and by paper form.
The new scheme becomes compulsory in September 2013.

Manchester: A Certain Future seeks a Chair for its Stakeholder Steering Group.
The Stakeholder Steering Group exists to oversee the direction of the Climate Change Action Plan for Manchester on behalf of stakeholders from across the city.
The time commitment for this high-profile voluntary position will be 3-4 days per month. The contract duration is three years.

Action for Sustainable Living is in the final year of a four-year Lottery-funded project supporting communities in south Manchester to become more sustainable, resilient and skilled through engagement in community environmental activities.
ASL is looking for an Evaluation Consultant to analyse the impact of this project on people’s lives. The Consultant will gather target quantitative information, guide and incorporate qualitative data from existing information and additional interviews and produce a user-friendly report. The final report must be submitted by mid-July 2013.

Barnardo’s has joined up with Manchester-based POPS (Partners of Prisoners and Families Support Group) to provide information, support and training to professionals working with families of offenders, including those working in prisons, probation, voluntary organisations, local and health authorities.
A two-year contract worth £900,000 has been awarded by the Department for Education for the running of the National Knowledge and Advice Service which will share best practice and offer training and support to frontline staff and those responsible for strategic development and commissioning.

A study by New Philanthropy Capital says Britons would give about £700m extra yearly if they were more sure of charities' impact
The report has created concern that charity leaders are failing to prove the effectiveness of their work and that the British public would give more if they were provided with better information and were convinced their donations were doing good.
